The Origins of Flagway

YPP is excited to introduce a new social studies station debuting at the Math Playground: “The Origins of Flagway”. This engaging exhibit invites students to explore the powerful historical timeline that led to the creation of Flagway. They’ll journey from the grassroots organizing of the Mississippi civil rights movement—spearheaded by Bob Moses (Flagway inventor) and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC)—to the present day, culminating in the 2025 National Flagway Tournament.

Students will also have a chance to personalize history by adding their own entry to the timeline. They can include the year they joined Flagway and reflect on their experiences preparing for the tournament.

Wondering where the math comes in? To bring it all together, students will use their personalized timelines to play TripLine, an Algebra Project activity that helps students explore the distance, direction, and relative positioning of points on a numberline.

We’re especially honored to share that SNCC elders will be present at scheduled times during the tournament to share their stories and experiences. This is a unique opportunity for students to connect with living history.
